Sunday Ends In a Split for Pioneers and Prairie Baseball

Game 1 - Pioneers 8... Prairie Baseball Academy 6

On a much cooler day in Miles City, the MCC Pioneers struck up another doubleheader with Prairie Baseball Academy (Lethbridge, Alberta) in a game filled with errors. 

PBA got off to the good start on this day by scoring a run in the top of the 1st and another in the 3rd to take a 2-0 lead. MCC answered with a run in the bottom of the 3rd when Cooper Morlang (2B - Rapid City, SD) doubled to leftfield with one out. Brandon Hegedus (C - Rapid  City, SD) walked and Morlang scored on a grounder by Evan Smith (3B - Wenatchee, WA) and a PBA error. 

PBA took a 5-1 lead in the top of the 4th but the Pioneers answered quickly with 3 in the bottom of the 4th to cut the lead to 5-4. Davis Mosier (1B - Billings, MT) was hit by a pitch and Spencer Searcey (CF - Denver, CO) doubled to drive in a run and then scored on a PBA error. Jace Notbohm (DH - Miles City, MT) singled and Dyson Kinneman (SS - Belgrade, MT) hit a bunt single and Notbohm moved to 3rd on an error. Taichi Fuchinaga (2B - Honolulu, HI) hit a sacrifice fly RBI for the final run of the inning.  

PBA quickly added 2 runs in the top of the 5th and another in the top of the 7th for an 8-4 lead. MCC pushed closer in the bottom of the 7th with 2 runs. Bryan Roselles (C - Rapid City, SD) was hit by a pitch and pinch hitter Kade Mosley (Miles City, MT) smacked a 2-run homer to make the score 8-6. MCC could not inch any closer and PBA snuck out of game 3 with a win. 

Mason Peters (Columbia Falls, MT) got the start for the Pioneers and pitched 3 innings (2 H, 2 R, BB, 2 SO). Lucas Smith (Post Falls, ID) came in to start the 4th inning (H, 3 R, 2 BB) and was relieved by Hayden Meehan (Columbia Falls, MT) for the final 4 innings. Meehan allowed 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, and had 3 strikeouts. 

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers had 7 hits and Searcey was the only player with more than one hit. 
  • PBA had 9 hits including a home run and 2 doubles. 
  • Each team committed 4 errors. 
  • The Pioneers struck out 6 times and PBA struck out 5 times.

 

Game 2 - Pioneers... Prairie Baseball Academy

It appeared as though the Pioneers were not too pleased with the result of game one. After PBA kicked the game off with a run in the 1st inning, th Pioneers picked up 6 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Jessen West (SS - Billings, MT) led the inning off with a solo home run. Coleman Parry (1B - American Fork, UT) singled and Lance Bralien (LF - Helena, MT) hit a home run that might still be traveling to Wyoming for a 3-1 lead. Luke Wilson (C - Calgary, Alberta) singled and was replaced by courtesy runner Searcey who moved to 3rd on a couple of wild pitches. Kinneman then hit a sacrifice fly RBI to rightfield. With 2 outs, Brady Bickett (CF - Rapid City, SD) walked, Notbohm reached base on another error and Bickett scored on that same error. Kade Mosley drove in Notbohm with a single to centerfield. 

PBA picked up a run in the top of the 3rd and the Pioneers sprung for 3 in the bottom of the 3rd. Parry led off the inning with a solo shot to leftfield. Bratlien and Wilson walked before Kinneman sacrificed moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Lukas Smith was hit by a pitch and Bickett hit a sacrifice fly scoring Bratlien. Courtesy runner Searcey then scored on a error by the PBA pitcher for a 9-2 lead. 

MCC scored another in the 4th on a Mosley solo home run. The game ended early in the bottom of the 5th inning as the Pioneers scored 4 more runs. Bickett was hit by a pitch and stole 2nd base. Mosley walked and West singled to load up the bases before Parry hit a grand slam home run for the 14-2 win. 

Taichi Fuchinaga got the start and pitched 3 innings (4 H, 2 R, 3 SO) and gave way to Josiah Ruther (Whitefish, MT) for one inning (BB, SO). Colin Fortier (American Fork, UT) pitched the last inning (2 SO). 

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers had 9 hits, 5 of them home runs. 
  • Prairie had only 4 hits.
  • PBA committed 2 errors and MCC 1.
  • MCC had 4 stolen bases and PBA 1. 
  • Parry had a 3-3 day with 2 home runs and 5 RBI. 
  • West and Mosley each had 2 hits. 

The Pioneers are now 13-10 on the season and start MonDak Conference play on Tuesday and Wednesday with doubleheaders against Bismarck State. These games were rescheduled from Saturday and Sunday with snow in the forecast. Games will start at 1:00 PM both days.
