Pioneer Baseball Wins Final Two Games Over Bismarck State

Game 1 - Pioneers 10... Bismarck State 3

The Pioneers got a strong pitching performance from Jacob Walker (Brisbane, Australia) and got 4 RBI from Kade Mosley (3B - Miles City, MT) in a wire to wire 10-3 win in game 3 of a 4-game series against Bismarck State. Walker scattered 7 hits and struck out 10 Mystic batters while walking only one in a complete game effort. 

MCC got on the board in the top of the 1st when Brady Bickett (CF - Rapid City, SD) singled and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. Mosley then singled to drive in Bickett for a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers broke the game open in the 4th inning with 5 runs. Taichi Fujinaga (2B - Honolulu, HI) reached base on an error and moved to 3rd with one out when Tanner Goertz (Highlands Ranch, CO) reached base on another Mystic error. Bryan Roselles (C - Rapid City, SD) singled to drive in a run and Goertz moved to 2nd. Dyson Kinnaman (Belgrade, MT) served as a courtesy runner and the runners moved a base on a sacrifice bunt from Bickett. Jace Notbohm (DH - Miles City, MT) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Mosley connected for a bases clearing double to make the score 5-0. Coleman Parry (1B - American Fork, UT) singled to drive in Mosley and put the Pioneers in a commanding 6-0 lead. 

Bismarck State scored a run in the bottom of the 4th but the Pioneers answered in the 5th with another run after Lance Bratlien (RF - Helena, MT) singled and Roselles walked. The runners moved a base on a wild pitch and then Bratlien scored on another Mystic wild pitch. 

The Mystics scored a run in the bottom of the 5th but the Pioneers plated 3 more in the 6th for a 10-2 lead. With one out, Parry was hit by a pitch but was out at 2nd on a sacrifice fly from Jessen West. West stole 2nd and reached 3rd on a passed ball before scoring on a Fujinaga single. Bratlien then drilled a 2-run home run. 

BSC added an irrelevant run in the bottom of the 7th.

Inside the Box Score

  • MCC had 11 hits and BSC had 7.
  • Mystic pitchers walked 4 batters. 
  • The Pioneers had the only 2 stolen bases of the game. 
  • Mosley, West, Bratlien, and Roselles each had 2 hits for the Pioneers.

Game 2 - Pioneers 10... Bismarck State 7

Jessen West smacked 2 home runs, drove in 4, and Coleman Parry hit his 10th home run of the season and the Pioneers held off a late Bismarck State rally to sweep Wednesday afternoon in Miles City, MT. 

The Pioneers got things started with 2 runs in the 2nd inning starting with back to back walks by West and Fujinaga. After a balk by the Mystic pitcher the runners moved up a base. West scored on a sacrifice fly RBI from Bratlien and Fujinaga moved to 3rd. Fujinaga scored on a ground out by Brandon Hegedus (C - Littleton, CO).  MCC tacked on a run in the in the 3rd inning when Notbohm singled and then scored on a double from Mosley. The Pioneers took a 4-0 lead in the 4th innning after a Hegedus single (Kinnaman in as courtesy runner), Lucas Smith (Post Falls, ID) had a sacrifice bunt to move Kinnaman to 2nd. Kinnaman went to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on a Notbohmm double. 

BSC scored a run in the bottom of the 4th on a home run. MCC picked up 2 runs in the top of the 5th on back to back home runs from Parry and West. 

The Mystics then answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th to cut the lead to 6-3. MCC tried to put things away with 4 runs in the 6th inning. Brady Bickett walked, stole 2nd, and moved to 3rd on a wild pitch. Mosley then walked and Parry singled to drive in Bickett. Jessen West nailed his 2nd home run of the game to drive in 3 and give the Pioneers a 10-3 lead. 

Bismarck State scored a run in the bottom of the 6th to make the scored 10-4 and then scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th and had the bases loaded but could not produce any more runs from there.

Brady Bickett got the start on the mound and pitched 4 innings (7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 5 SO) and was replaced by Spencer Searcey (Denver, CO) for the next 2 innings (2 H, R, BB, SO). Mayson Shively (Three Forks, MT) came in to start the 7th inning (3 H, 3 R) and Sam Hall (Eureka, MT) finished the game (BB, 2 SO).

  • Bismarck State outhit the Pioneers 12-9.
  • MCC had 5 extra base hits and BSC had 4.
  • MCC had 2 stolen bases and BSC had 1.
  • Neither team committed an error.
  • Nobohm, Parry, and West had 2 hits for MCC.
  • West had 4 RBI.
  • 9 Pioneer batters struck out and 8 Mystic batters struck out. 

The Pioneers are 3-1 in MonDak Conference play and 16-11 overall. MCC will travel to Wahpeton, ND for games on March 29-30.
