Pioneer Baseball Wins 2 Games In Different Fashion

Game 1 - Pioneer 6... Lake Region State 5

Lake Region State was on the verge of winning their first conference game of the 2024 season taking a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the 7th inning but the MCC Pioneers locked in a the plate and scored 3 runs to win in walk off fashion on a RBI single from Kade Mosley (3B - Miles City, MT). The game winning hit by Mosley was his only hit of the game. 

MCC scored first breaking a 0-0 tie with 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Lance Bratlien (RF - Helena, MT) reached base on an error and moved to 2nd on the same error. Chandler Smith (C - Miles City, MT) singled to drive in Bratlien to start the scoring. Courtesy runner Dyson Kinnaman (Belgrade, MT) stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on a single off the bat of Brady Bickett (CF - Rapid City, SD). 

Lake Region quickly took the lead with 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning before the Pioneers tied the game in the 5th inning on a solo home run from Jaden Salazar (LF - Chicago, IL). 

The game remained tied until the top of the 7th when the Royals scored on a 2-out, 2-run home run and it appeared as an upset was in the making. Bratlien led the bottom of the 7th inning off with a single. With one out, Smith and Bickett walked to load up the bases. Jace Notbohm (DH - Miles City, MT) got his first hit of the game with a 2 RBI single to tie the game at 5-5. A throwing error allowed Bickett to move to 3rd and Notbohm to 2nd setting up the game winning hit from Mosley. 

Max Holden (Kalispell, MT) got the start and pitched 6.2 innings (7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 7 SO). Jace Notbohm pitched 0.1 innings (H, R).

  • The Pioneers had 11 hits and LRSC had 8. 
  • Chandler Smith, Bratlien, and Jessen West (SS - Billings, MT) each had 2 hits for the Pioneers.

Game 2 - Pioneers 14... Lake Region State 2 (5 Innings)

Kade Mosley and Taichi Fujinaga (2B - Honolulu, HI) each had 4 RBI as MCC ran away with game 2 by winning in 5 innings due to the 10-run rule. 

Lake Region scored a run in the top of the 1st but the Pioneers tallied 8 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Jessen West walked and Fujinaga smacked a 2- run home run to leftfield. Lance Bratlien was then hit by a pitch and Jaden Salazar singled to rightfield and Bratlien scored on a Royal error. Salazar moved to 2nd base on the error. With 2 outs, Notbohm drove in Salazar and Mosley doubled to bring in Notbohm. Coleman Parry (1B - American Fork, UT) singled to drive in Mosley. West followed that with a single and Fujinaga cleared the bases with a triple to give the Pioneers a 8-1 lead. 

Lake Region scored in the top of the 3rd but the Pioneers got 4 more runs in the bottom of the inning. Salazar led the inning off with a double and Bryan Roselles (C - Rapid City, SD) drove in Salazar with a single. Roselles moved to 2nd on the throw to home and was replaced by Kinnaman. Brady Bickett walked and Kinnaman moved to 3rd on a fly ball out by Notbohm. Mosley followed that with a 3-run home run to leftfield. 

MCC plated their final 2 runs in the 4th inning as Salazar reached base again with a single and Roselles walked (Courtesy runner Colin Fortier). Jake McIntyre (Whitefish, MT) singled to drive in Salazar. Evan Smith (Wenatchee, WA) walked and Fortier scored on a sacrifice fly RBI from Dyson Kinnaman. 

Jacob Walker (Brisbane, Australia) pitched a complete game 5 innings (6 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 5 SO) to get the win.

  • The Pioneers had 13 hits and Lake Region had just 6. Salazar had 3 hits, Fujinaga had 2 hits, Mosley had 2 hits. 
  • Lake Region had 2 errors. 
  • LRSC had 2 stolen bases and MCC had 1. 
  • Pioneer batters struck out only twice and walked 5 times. 

The Pioneers moved to 12-2 and lead the MonDak Conference. They are 25-12 overall. LRSC dropped to 0-8 in conference play and 5-17 overall. The teams play a doubleheader Sunday starting at 11:00 AM.
