Strong Pitching Pushes Pioneers to Sweep Over Lake Region

Game 1 - Pioneers 16... Lake Region State 4 (5 Innings)

Mason Peters (Columbia Falls, MT) and Colin Fortier (American Fork, UT) combined on a 3-hitter and the Pioneers scored runs in every innings as MCC dominated Lake Region State College 16-4 in 5 innings in game 1 on Sunday. 

Peters pitched 4 innings (3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO) and Fortier polished off the 5th inning with 2 strikouts in the win. 

Jace Notbohm (DH - Miles City, MT) had the hot bat with a 3-3 effort (3B, 2 R, 4 RBI) in a balanced Pioneer hitting attack. Brady Bickett (CF - Rapid City, SD), Kade Mosley (3B - Miles City, MT) and Jaden Salazar (LF - Chicago, IL) each had 3 hits for MCC.

MCC got 5 runs in the first inning highlighted by a 2 RBI single from Jessen West (SS - Billings, MT) to start the scoring. Salazar had a 2 RBI single to follow. In the 2nd inning, Bickett singled and stole 2nd and 3rd before scoring on a Notbohm single. 

Lake Region scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd but MCC quickly answered with 3 runs in the 3rd. Notbohm had his 2nd RBI single in the inning and Bickett scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Coleman Parry (1B - American Fork, UT). 

LRSC got a run in the 3rd but MCC followed with 4 in the 4th inning. Lance Bratlien (RF - Helena, MT) had a RBI single after a Taichi Fujinaga (2B - Honolulu, HI) walk and stolen base. MCC then scored on a wild pitch and RBI triple from Notbohm. Mosley had a RBI double to make the score 13-3 after the top of the 4th. 

Lake Region got their final run in the bottom of the 4th and the Pioneers finished the game with 3 runs in the top of the 5th. The Pioneers scored on a RBI double off the bat of Tanner Goertz (Highlands Ranch, CO) following a walk from Dyson Kinnaman (Belgrade, MT). Casey Morgan (Salt Lake City, UT) hit a RBI single and Evan Smith (Wenatchee, WA) finished off the Pioneer scoring with a sacrifice fly RBI.

  • The Pioneers had 13 hits to just 3 for the Royals. 
  • MCC committed 2 errors and LRSC had 1. 
  • LRSC pitchers walked 11 batters and hit 2 others. Pioneer pitchers walked only 4. 
  • The Pioneers had 9 stolen bases and Lake Region had 0.

 

Game 2 - Pioneers 8... Lake Region State 1

Mayson Shively (Three Forks, MT) took a no-hitter to the 6th inning in a strong pitching performance (6.0 IP, 3 H, R, ER, 5 SO) before giving way to Davis Mosier (Billings, MT) for the final inning (H, SO). 

The MCC bats were held relatively quiet in game 2 with only 6 hits. Kade Mosley had a 2-3 effort (2B, 3 RBI, R) and Jaden Salazar was 2-3 (2 RBI, R) and wwere the Pioneers with more than one hit. Coleman Parry (RBi) and Taichi Fujinaga (2 RBI) were the only other players with a hit. 

MCC scored 4 runs in the 1st inning highlighted by the Fujinaga 2 RBI double and 2 RBI single from Salazar. The Pioneers added a run in the 2nd on Mosley's RBI double and another in the 4th on a RBI single from Parry. MCC's final runs came on a 2 RBI single from Mosley. 

Inside the Box Score

  • MCC committed the only error of the game.
  • Pioneer batters were walked 9 times and hit by pitch 4 times. 
  • The Pioneers stole 5 bases. 
  • Pioneer pitchers did not walk a Royal batter and hit one batter. 

The Pioneers lead the MonDak Conference with a 14-2 record and are a game ahead of Bismarck State (and hold the tiebreaker over the Mystics). MCC is 27-12 overall. Lake Region fell to 0-10 in conference and 5-19 overall. MCC will make up 2 games with NDSCS on Monday afternoon in Miles City. 1st pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
