Pioneer Baseball Powers Past Dawson

Game 1 - Pioneers 8... Dawson 0

Three Pioneer pitchers combined on a 5-hit shutout and MCC scored 5 runs in the 2nd inning to help ease past Dawson CC 8-0 on Thursday afternoon. 

Mason Peters (Columbia Falls, MT) got the start on the mound and pitched 4.1 innings (5 H, 4 BB, 3 SO) before giving way to Sam Hall (Eureka, MT) for the next 1.2 innings (2 SO) in which he pitched perfectly. Brandon Hegedus (Littleton, CO) pitched a perfect 7th inning to close out the game. 

Lance Bratlien (RF - Helena, MT) led off the 2nd inning with a double, stole 3rd, and scored on a error by the Dawson catcher. With 2 outs, Brady Bickett (CF - Rapid City, SD) tripled and scored when Jace Notbohm (DH - Miles City, MT) reached base on an error. Coleman Parry (1B - American Fork, UT) drove Notbohm in with a double to leftfield and the Pioneers led 3-0. Jaden Salazar (LF - Chicago, IL) followed that up with a two-run home run and the Pioneers were off and running. 

The scored stayed 5-0 until the 5th inning when the Pioneers got some insurance with 2 more runs. Taichi Fujinaga (2B - Honolulu, HI) walked and moved to 2nd on a single by Dyson Kinnaman (3B - Belgrade, MT). Fujinaga and Kinnaman stole the next base and were driven in by a single from Chandler Smith (C - Miles City, MT). The Pioneers picked up their last run in the 6th inning when Bratlien was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. 

Notbohm, Parry (2 2B), and Salazar (HR) each had 2 hits for MCC.

Game 2 - Pioneers 18... Dawson 2

A game that was a pitchers dual thru 4 innings turned in to an all out onslaught in the 5th and 6th innings as the Pioneers scored 7 runs in the 5th and 10 runs in the 6th inning to build an 18-0 lead. Dawson got their only 2 runs of the game in the bottom of the 6th but it was not enough to keep the game going and the Pioneers won their 9th game in a row. 

The Pioneers got on the board in the 1st inning when Jace Notbohm walked and Coleman Parry doubled. Jaden Salazar drove in Notbohm with a sacrifice fly RBI. 

The scored stayed that way until the 5th inning when Parry walked to lead off the inning and then with 2 outs, the floodgates opened. Parry advanced to 2nd on a ground out and scored an a Dawson error on a ball hit by Taichi Fujinaga. Lance Bratlien and Dyson Kinnaman drew back to back walks to load the bases and Luke Wilson (C - Calgary, Alberta) walked to bring in a run. Brady Bickett was hit by a pitch to score another run and Notbohm followed that up with a towering grand slam home run to centerfield. 

The Pioneers piled on 10 more runs in the 6th inning added by walks, errors, and 4 base hits. 

Mayson Shively (Three Forks, MT) pitched a complete game 6 innings (7 H, 2 R, 6 SO).

Inside the Box Score

  • MCC had 9 hits and DCC had 7.
  • DCC committed 5 errors and MCC had 2.
  • Shively did not walk a batter.
  • Pioneer batters stuck out 9 times. 
  • Wilson and Bratlien were the only Pioneers with 2 hits. 

The Pioneers will travel to Bottineau, ND this weekend in quest for the MonDak Conference regular season title. 3 wins in 4 games would give MCC the title. Games on Saturday start at 12:00 PM MST and on Sunday at 10:00 AM MST. MCC is now 31-12 overall and 18-2 in conference play.
