Pioneers 92... Lake Region State 85 OT
The MCC Pioneers outscored Lake Region State 15-8 in the overtime session to grind out a big 92-85 victory on the road in Devils Lake, ND. Blessing Adesipe (Houston, TX) scored 37 points (13-18 FG, 3-5 3's, 8-11 FT) and pulled down 11 rebounds (5 Off) to lead the way for MCC.
Lake Region led by 8 points late in the first half but the Pioneers got some momentum heading in to the halftime break by scoring the final 4 points of the half to cut the lead to 39-35. MCC then scored 1st in the 2nd half and the game was close the rest of the way as there were 11 ties and 7 lead changes in the contest.
Lake Region guard Mayson Brown hit 2 free throws with 13 seconds left in the game to tie the score 77-77 and a last second shot by the Pioneers fell off the rim to send the game to overtime.
The Pioneers got a couple of big steals in the overtime session that turned in to fast break layups and a 4-point lead they would not relinquish. The Pioneers biggest lead of the game was an 8-point margin in the extra session.
Erick Barea (Celaya, Mexico) scored 18 points (6-12 FG, 2-4 3's, 4-5 FT) and had 4 rebounds. Denzel Kabasele (Lancaster, PA) added 15 points (5-10 FG, 2-2 3's, 3-6 FT) to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. David Gorianskii (Tralee, Ireland) collected 8 rebounds and had 3 blocked shots for the Pioneers.
Lake Region was led by Mohand Ammad with 19 points (7-11 FG, 3-4 3's, 2-3 FT) and 7 rebounds off the bench for the Royals. Ja'vion Byers added 13 points (5-14 FG, 1-4 3's, 2-4 FT) and Mayson Brown added 12 points (3-5 FG, 2-3 3's, 4-4 FT).
MCC shot 34-69 (49%) from the field and 8-15 from 3-point line. MCC survived 10 missed free throws in the 2nd half and overtime shooting 16-27 (59%) for the game. The Royals were 31-67 (46%) and 7-17 from 3-point line. They hit on 16-21 free throws. The Royals outrebounded MCC 38-34 but LRSC had 19 turnovers compared to 13 for MCC.
The Pioneers moved to 2-2 in MonDak Conference play and 2-3 overall. Lake Region fell to 1-3 in MonDak Conference play and 2-3 overall. The Pioneers travel to Bismarck, ND Sunday for an afternoon tilt against United Tribes Tech at 2:00 PM MST.
