Pioneers Snag Win Over Lake Region in Last Home Game of 2023

The MCC Pioneers took a hard fought 40-35 lead to the halftime break and then broke things open early in the 2nd half outscoring the Royals 43-28 in the final 20 minutes for a 83-63 MonDak Conference win at home in Miles City on Sunday afternoon. 

The Pioneers got 17 points (7-16 FG, 0-2 3's, 3-4 FT) and 9 rebounds off the bench from Daniel Piech Meat (6'6 Sophomore) and 18 points (5-8 FG, 2-3 3's, 6-7 FT) from Payton Kokot (6'3 Sophomore) to lead a scoring attack that saw 12 players find the scoring column. Ethan Venema (6'7 Sophomore) added 11 points (4-11 FG, 1-3 3's, 2-2 FT) and 9 rebounds in the win. 

Lake Region was led by Blessed Barhayiga (6'8 Sophomore) with 12 points (3-6 FG, 6-8 FT) and got another 11 points (4-14 FG, 0-4 3's, 3-4 FT) from Noah Bonick (6'2 Sophomore). Drew Bordeaux (6'1 Sophomore) added 10 points (4-11 FG, 2-7 3's). The Royals also got 9 points (3-7 FG, 0-1 3's, 3-5 FG) and 11 rebounds from Ginuwine Tropnas (6'8 Freshman).

  • The Pioneers shot 28-66 (42%) from the field and 8-20 (40%) from 3-point range. MCC was 20-25 at the free throw line. 
  • The Royals shot 21-56 (38%) from the field and 3-19 (16%) from 3-point range. LRSC hit 17-24 at the free throw line. 
  • The Pioneers outrebounded the Royals 43-33 with 10 offensive rebounds. Lake Region State had 5 offensive boards. 
  • The Pioneers committed a season low 12 turnovers and the Royals had 18. 
  • MCC had 14 assists on 28 baskets and the Royals had only 9 assists. 

The Pioneers moved to 5-2 in MonDak Conference play and 9-3 overall. The Royals fell to 2-5 in league play and 2-9 overall. MCC will face Casper College on Thursday at 2:15 PM in Gillette, WY.
