MCC Rallies in 2nd Half to Salvage Big Win in Spokane

The Miles Community College Pioneers rallied from a 9-point 2nd half deficit and used strong defense and timely baskets to defeat Spokane Community College on Sunday in Spokane, WA. The game was the 3rd in 3 days for the Pioneers following losses to Casper College and North Idaho College. The Pioneers flipped the script in the 2nd half shooting 54% after shooting just 39% in the 1st half. MCC also missed 6 free throws in the 1st half and only 2 in the 2nd half. 

Yohandry Ortiz (6'5 Freshman - Naples, FL) had the hot hand for the Pioneers scoring 39 points (14-24 FG, 7-10 3's, 4-4 FT) to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Mack Page (6'5 Sophomore - Worland, WY) pitched in with 14 points (7-10 FG, 0-1 3's, 0-2 FT) and 6 rebounds. Koak Kok (6'7 Sophomore - Ulan, South Sudan) had a nice effort on the boards with 14 rebounds (6 offensive). 

Spokane led 39-34 at halftime after the Pioneers shot 3-9 from the free throw line and SCC scored the first 4 points of the 2nd half to build a 43-34 lead. The Pioneers put things together from there outscoring SCC 54-32 from that point forward. 

Spokane was led by Zack Reighard (5'11 Sophomore - Spokane, WA) with 18 points (7-18 FG, 4-11 3's) and Grant Olsen (6'5 Freshman - Hermiston, OR) with 14 points (6-9 FG, 0-1 3's, 2-2 FT). Sam Phillips (6'1 Sophomore - Billings, MT) had a team high 8 rebounds for the Bigfoot.

  • The Bigfoot shot 30-75 (40%) from the field and 9-30 (30%) from the 3-point line. SCC was 6-8 from the free throw line. 
  • MCC outrebounded SCC 44-42. MCC had 15 offensive boards and SCC had 16. 
  • Miles committed 10 turnovers and Spokane had 15.
  • Each team had 11 assists. 

The Pioneers upped their record to 6-5 on the season and will face Dickinson State JV on Sunday, Dec. 1 in Dickinson, ND at 4:00 PM MST.
