Pioneer Softball Dominates Opening Day of MonDak Conference Play

Game 1 - Pioneers 14... Bismarck State 1

The MCC Pioneer Softball team opened its 2022 home schedule with a hitting masterpiece to roll Bismarck State 14-1 in 5 innings. 

All 14 runs were tallied in the 1st 3 innings as the Pioneers dominated the Mystics in game 1. C HaiLeigh Davis (Shepherd, MT) walked and stole 2nd base. 2B Abby Johnson reached on an error that allowed Davis to score. LF Liz Ybarra (Belgrade, MT) doubled to centerfield that drove in Johnson. Ybarra advanced to 3rd on a Lili Nihi (Moanalua, HA) groundout. P Hazel Eaton (Belgrade, MT) then grounded out scoring Ybarra. RF Mars Weaver (Rexburg, ID) walked and 3B Megan Toplovich (Great Falls, MT) singled to scored Weaver and make the score 4-0 Pioneers. CF Skyler Higgs belted a 2-run homer to leftfield in to the wind to make the score 6-0 and the Mystics could not recover. 

A 2-run 2nd inning was started out with a 1-out single by 2B Abby Johnson (Hamilton, MT). Ybarra singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Johnson scored on a passed ball and Ybarra sored on an error after an error by BSC 3B to make the score 7-1. Weaver then reached on an error that scored Ybarra to make the score 8-1.

Higgs then drew a walk in the 3rd inning and SS Sierra John (Idaho Falls, ID) was hit by a pitch. Davis then singled after the runners moved bases on a wild pitch to make the score 10-1. Abby Johnson doubled to CF and Ybarra grounded out scoring Johnson to make score 11-1. Nihi and Eaton followed that up with back to back singles and were driven in by a Weaver single to make score 12-1. Toplovich then singled and scored 2 more for the final tally of 14-2. 

Johnson was 2-3 with 3 runs scored. Ybarra was 2-3 (2 RBI, 2 Runs) while Toplovich was 2-3 (HR, 3 RBI, 1 R). They were only players with multiple hits. 

Hazel Eaton pitched a complete game 4 hitter. She went 5 innings and allowed only a run with a walk and 4 strikeouts. 

 

Game 2 - Pioneers 10... Bismarck State 0

Game 2 was a replica of game 1. The Pioneers jumped on the Mystics early and often cruising to a 10-0 win. A 9-run 2nd inning would be all the Pioneers needed in a 10-0 victory and doubleheader sweep of the Bismarck State Mystics on Saturday in Miles City. 

The Pioneers got on the board 1st when C HaiLeigh Davis hit a lead off single. With one out, Liz Ybarra singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. After another out, Megan Toplovich reached on an error that scored Davis for the quick lead.

Skylar Higgs then doubled and scored on a Madi Henry (Spanish Fork, UT) single 

Any chance the Mystics had blew up in the 2nd when the Pioneers piled on 9 runs. CF Skylar Higgs doubled and then scored when P Madi Henry (Spanish Fork, UT) singled to right. With one out, Davis singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Abby Johnson then singled to load the bases. Ybarra stayed hot with a double to CF that scored 2 and gave the Pioneers a 4-0 lead. Eaton then cracked a 2-run double to centerfield to make the score 6-0. The punishment continued when Toplovich smacked a 2-run homer in to the wind to make the score 8-0. RF Reed Johnson (Columbus, MT) reached on an error and Skylar Higgs walked. SS Sierra John walked to load the bases. HaiLeigh Davis plated the next 2 runners to make the score 10-0 and that is where it ended. 

Madi Henry (Spanish Fork, UT) was solid in the circle as she gave up only a hit in 3 innings and struck out 3. Alex Carr (Idaho Falls, ID) was sharp over the final 2 innings as she allowed only 2 hits and struck out 2. 

The 2 teams will play again in Miles City tomorrow starting at 12:00 PM pending field availablility.
