Sweep of Bismarck State Completed By Pioneer Softball

Game 1 - Pioneers 9... Bismarck State 1

Peyton Whitehead (Joliet, MT) had another impressive pitching performance by allowing only one run in the bottom of the 5th inning and giving up just 4 hits as the Pioneers defeated Bismarck State 9-1 in 5 innings. Whitehead walked 4 batters and struck out 6. The Pioneers scored in every inning in taking game 3 of the 4 game series on Wednesday afternoon in Miles City. 

MCC was the visitor for the 2 games on Wednesday and didn't waste any time getting started by scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning. Shannon Nelson (SS - Livingston, MT) led the game off with a single and moved to 2nd on a single by Cassidy Bagnell (CF - Frenchtown, MT). Nelson and Bagnell moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Richardson (1B - Helena, MT). Dalilah Hernandez (2B - Laurel, MT) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Khloey Robinson (LF - Belgrade, MT) cleared the bases with a triple to rightfield. 

The Pioneers struck for 2 more in the 2nd inning after Ella Anderson (RF - Miles City, MT) walked and moved to 2nd on a ground out. Nelson then reached on an error by the Mystic 2nd baseman and Anderson scored. Bagnell then reached on an error pushing Nelson to 2nd and Taylor Feller (C - Laurel, MT) followed that with a RBI double. In the 3rd inning, Isabelle Adams (3B - Park City, MT) hit a double with 2 outs. Anderson then singled to put runners on the corners and Arin Eaton (DP - Belgrade, MT) hit a double to drive in 2 more runs and the Pioneers led 7-0. 

The 4th inning started with a Bagnell single and she followed that by stealing 2nd and 3rd. Feller hit an RBI single to make the score 8-0. In the 5th, Eaton singled and moved to 2nd on a passed ball. Lily Bolin (Billings, MT) ripped a RBI single to make the score 9-0. Bismarck State got their only run in the bottom of the 5th but it would not be enough as the game ended by the 8-run rule.

  • The Pioneers cracked 12 hits to just 4 for the Mystics.
  • Bagnell had the only 2 stolen bases of the game.
  • Bismarck State committed 3 errors and the Pioneers had 1.
  • Bagnell, Feller, and Eaton each had 2 hits in the game.

Game 2 - Pioneers 10... Bismarck State 5

MCC completed the 4 game sweep in a hard fought game that went back and forth before finally being decided by a big 6th inning by the Pioneers. The Pioneers got on the board 1st with a run in the 2nd inning on a solo home run by Brooke Richardson. MCC took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning when Ella Anderson singled and moved to 2nd on a sacrifice by Arin Eaton. With 2 outs, Cassidy Bagnell reached base on a Mystic error resulting in Anderson scoring. 

Bismarck State cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the 3rd and then took the lead with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th. That lead was short lived as MCC put 3 runs on the board in the 5th inning. Eaton doubled with one out and moved to 3rd on a single from Shannon Nelson. Bagnell then tripled to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead. Taylor Feller was hit by a pitch and Richardson hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield to score Bagnell. 

Bismarck State tied the game 5-5 with 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th and the Pioneers broke the game open with 5 runs in the top of the 6th inning. Khloey Robinson led the inning off with a walk and Isabelle Adams singled. With one out, Eaton singled to load the bases. Shannon Nelson drew a walk and was followed by a 2 RBI double from Bagnell. Feller was hit by a pitch to load the bases again and Richardson grounded out by Nelson scored. Dalilah Hernandez then singled to drive in Bagnell for the final winning margin of 10-5. 

Rian Ferriter (Butte, MT) started the game pitching for MCC and completed 4 innings (6 H, 5 R, BB, 2 SO). She was replaced by Peyton Whitehead for the final 3 innings (H, BB, SO).

  • MCC had 10 hits and BSC had 7.
  • The Pioneers had 2 stolen bases and the Mystics had one. 
  • BSC had the only 2 errors of the game. 
  • Both teams pitchers walked only 2 batters.

The Pioneers are 4-0 in MonDak Conference action and are 10-5 overall. Next up is a trip to Wahpeton, ND for a 4-game series with NDSCS on Friday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30.
