Home Runs Highlight Pioneer Split With Dawson

Game 1 - Pioneers 12... Dawson 4 (5 Innings)

Arin Eaton (RF - Belgrade, MT) cracked a walk off grand slam home run to cap off a 6-home run game for the Pioneers as MCC ended game one early in 5th inning on the 8-run rule. The Pioneer bats liked the 70 degree temperatures as Eaton smacked 2 home runs and MCC also got dingers from Dalilah Hernandez (2B - Laurel, MT), Isabelle Adams (3B - Park City, MT), Rian Ferriter (Butte, MT), and Taylor Feller (Laurel, MT).

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first on a solo home run by Hernandez in the 2nd inning. Eaton smacked her first home run of the game on a solo shot in the 3rd inning. Dawson cut the lead to 2-1 on a home run. 

MCC had its big inning in the 4th to take command of the game by scoring 6 runs. Hernandez led the inning with a walk and Rian Ferriter cleared the fence to make it 4-1. One out later, Isabelle Adams sent a solo shot to centerfield. Shannon Nelson (SS - Livingston, MT) and Cassidy Bagnell (CF - Frenchtown, MT) hit back to back singles and moved to 2nd and 3rd on a Dawson throwing miscue. Nelson scored on a passed ball and Feller cracked a 2-run homer for a 8-1 lead. 

Dawson plated 3 runs in the 4th inning to give themselves a chance s they cut the lead to 8-4. That chance was quickly shut down by Eaton after the 1st 3 batters of the inning walked to load the bases and Eaton ended the game with a shot to centerfield. 

Peyton Whitehead pitched a complete game 5 innings (7 H, 4 R, BB, 2 SO) to pick up the win. 

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers committed 4 errors and the Buccaneers had 0.

Game 2 - Pioneers 10... Dawson 14 (11 Innings)

In a game for the ages, Dawson catcher Brooke Lijewski hit a grand slam home run in the top of the 11th inning and the Pioneers were unable to recover from that shot as Dawson took a 14-10 win to earn a split on Wednesday afternoon. 

Miles kicked off the scoring with 3 runs in the 1st inning. Shannon Nelson reached base on a bunt error by Dawson and moved to 2nd. Cassidy Bagnell and Taylor Feller each walked to load the bases. Brooke Richardson singled to drive in Nelson and with one out Bagnell scored on a passed ball. Feller followed that up by scoring on another passed ball.

Dawson picked up a run in the top of the 2nd and the Pioneers scored 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to build a 5-1 lead. Arin Eaton walked and Nelson singled to push Eaton to 3rd. Bagnell slapped an RBI single to drive n Eaton. Nelson scored on a sacrifice fly from Feller. 

Dawson got 2 runs in the top of the 3rd and MCC picked up one more in the bottom of the inning as Khloey Robinson (LF - Belgrade, MT) singled with one out. Isabelle Adams walked and Eaton singled to load the bases. Robinson scored on a Nelson ground out and the Pioneers led 6-3. 

The game took a turn for the worse in the 4th inning when with 2 outs and no Bucs on base the Pioneers committed a couple of errors to go along with a couple of walks and a couple hits as Dawson plated 4 for a 7-6 lead. Dawson extended the lead to 9-6 in the top of the 6th inning and then the game got exciting. 

In the bottom of the 7th inning, Brooke Richardson led off with a solo home run. Lily Bolin (PH - Billings, MT) reached base on a hard hit error to shortstop. Robinson grounded in to a fielder's choice and Adams sent the game to extra innings with a 2-run home run to centerfield. 

Dawson got a run in the top of the 8th but MCC tied it with a lead off home run by Feller to start the bottom of the 8th. 

Neither team could score in the 9th or 10th innings and that led to Lijewski's grand slam home run. 

Arin Eaton started the game in the circle and pitched 3.2 innings (9 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) before being replaced by Peyton Whitehead for the final 7.1 innings (12 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 2 SO).

The Pioneers are now 5-3 in MonDak Conference play and 11-8 overall. Dawson is 1-1 in MonDak play and 14-10 overall. MCC will host Williston State on Friday and Saturday for a pair of doubleheaders. Friday games start at 1:00 PM and Saturday at 12:00 PM.
