Defense and Free Throws Lead to Pioneer Victory

The undefeated and 23rd ranked Pioneers withstood a sluggish first half and some hot shooting by Lake Region State to remain unbeaten with a 86-70 win over Lake Region State College. The win ran the Pioneers to 21-0 and chance at 2nd unbeated regular season in the last 3 campaigns. MCC missed multiple layups and 10 free throws in the first half and saw the Royals hit 7-13 from the three point line as MCC led only 37-34 at half. The Pioneers turned up the defense in the second half and outscored LRSC 33-18 in the 3rd quarter by forcing 28 turnovers for the game and scoring 29 points off of those turnovers. The Pioneers shot 15-16 from the free throw line in the 2nd half after a dismal 9-19 in the 1st half. MCC made 24 free throws compared to only 6 for the Royals. 

Lili Long spent most of the evening at the free throw line connecting on 13-17 and scoring 24 points to lead the offensive charge. Olyvia Pacheco hit 3 3's and finished with 17 points (6-10 FG, 3-6 3's, 2-3 FT) and the nation's leading scorer Rebekah Dallinger had a rough shooting night (4-16 FG, 1-8 3's, 4-6 FT) but still finished with 13 points and 10 assists. Jana Conejero scored 12 points (5-9 FG, 2-5 3's, 0-1 FT) and had 6 rebounds. Kate Tanner led the Pioneers with 8 rebounds. 

The Pioneers can cap a perfect regular season with a win Thursday night in Williston, ND. Tip time is 4:30 PM MST.
