Pioneers Get OT Win at National Tourney

Rebekah Dallinger scored 36 points (11-29 FG, 1-7 3's, 13-16 FT's), dished out 5 assists, and grabbed 5 rebounds to lead the MCC Pioneer women's basketball team to it's first ever win in the NJCAA National Tournament. The 18th seeded Pioneers knocked off the 2019 National Champion Gulf Coast State Commodores 76-72 in overtime to advance to the round of 16. 

Sophomore Lili Long was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 14 points (4-8 FG, 1-4 3's, 5-6 FT's), collected 8 rebounds and freshman guard Jana Conjero hit her only 3-pointer of the game with 9 seconds left that helped send the game to overtime at 63-63. Conjero had 7 points (2-9 FG, 1-5 3's, 2-2 FT) and 9 rebounds. Freshman forward Kate Tanner grabbed 15 rebounds and sophomore guard Olyvia Pacheco added 13 boards as the Pioneers outrebounded the Commodores 57-52 in a game that saw neither team shoot the ball well. 

The Pioneers were 23-70 from the field (33%) and only 5-24 from 3-point range (21%) but took advantage of the game at the FT line where they connected on 25-32 from the line (78%). Gulf Coast had it's chances late but couldn't find the range as they finished 27-84 from the field (32%), 7-27 from 3-point range (26%), and only 11-18 from the line for (61%). 

Gulf Coast was led in scoring by All-American candidate Nia Daniel with 20 points (8-18 FG, 3-6 3's, 1-1 FT). Gulf Coast led for only 7:23 of the game as the Pioneers controlled most of the action for 34:25.

The Pioneers will face the #2 seed Trinity Valley Cardinals on Tuesday night at 5:00 PM MST. The Cardinals are 19-2 on the season and won the Region 14 championship with a 60-34 victory over Tyler JC.
