Bismarck State Women Run Past MCC

The Bismarck State Mystics used a fast paced offense and a major edge in rebounding to earn a 83-54 MonDak Conference win over the Pioneers on Monday night in Bismarck. The Mystics got a strong performance out of their 3 starting frontcourt as all scored in double figures. Sam Oech (Beach, ND) led the way for the Mystics with 19 points(6-9 FG, 1-1 3's, 6-8 FT) and Reile Payne (Fargo, ND) had a double-double with 17 points (6-9 FG, 3-5 3's, 2-3 FT) and a team high 10 rebounds. Jaiden Baker (Bismarck, ND) added 10 points (4-11 FG, 1-4 3's, 1-2 FT) and 6 rebounds. 

The Mystics built a double digit lead in the 1st quarter but MCC ralllied late in the quarter with back to back 3's by Citlalli Gurrola (San Diego, CA) and the Mystics led 19-13 after one. There was 1 tie and 3 lead changes in the 1st quarter. That lead swelled to 15 at the half as the Mystics outscored the Pioneers 21-12. The 3rd quarter was fast and furious as the Mystics outscored the Pioneers 22-19 in that frame for an 18-point bulge after 3. The 4th quarter was all Mystics as they led by as many as 33 points with 3 minutes to play. 

The Pioneers got 38 points in the game off of their bench led by Isabel Saltenberger (Anaconda, MT) with 14 points (5-7 FG, 2-2 3's, 2-2 FT) and Gurrola who added 11 points (4-9 FG, 3-7 3's). Ella Paleea-Cook (Melbourne, Australia) led MCC in rebounding with 6 and Kelbee Denham (Malta, MT) had 8 assists. The Pioneer starters scored only 16 points on the night.

  • Bismarck State outrebounded the Pioneers 44-26 with 13 of those rebounds being offensive. MCC had only 2 offensive rebounds. 
  • MCC shot 20-58 (35%) from the field and 8-22 (36%) from the 3-point line. BSC was 30-70 (43%) and 7-25 (28%) from the 3-point line. 
  • The Pioneers committed 17 turnovers and the Mystics had 15.
  • The Mystics had the advantage at the free throw line connecting on 16-23 (70%) and the Pioneers were 6-6. 

MCC is now 5-15 in MonDak Conference play and 7-22 overall. The final regular season contest is Sunday afternoon at 1:00 as the Pioneers will host Dawson at 1:00 PM. That game will be Breast Cancer Awareness (Pink Day) as well as Sophomore day. Bismarck State moved to 15-5 in MonDak play and 22-5 overall.
