Pioneer Women Pull Off Upset Victory Over Williston State

The MCC Pioneer women got off to a strong 7-0 start and never looked back leading the entire game in a 71-65 victory over then 2nd place Williston State. The Pioneers built the lead to as many as 13 points in the 2nd quarter and held off every Teton rally in the 4th quarter.

Jessica Tomkins (Melbourne, Australia) continued her strong play with 20 points (7-13 FG, 6-6 FT) and 11 rebounds. Fellow Melbourne native India Blyth also went for 20 points (7-12 FG, 4-4 3's, 2-2 FT) and freshman Becky Melcher (Forsyth, MT) added 13 (4-10 FG, 4-8 3's, 1-2 FT). The Buenos Aires, Argentina connection of Catalina de Giorgi and Julia Paoletta helped out with 8 points apiece and Paoletta dished out 10 assists. 

Canberra, Australia product Hayley Macdonald led all scorers in the game with 23 points (7-15 FG, 1-6 3's, 8-8 FT) and 6 assists for the Tetons. Elizabeth Field (Grenora, ND) added 13 points (6-11 FG, 1-3 3's, 0-2 FT) and Irene de la Fuente (Valladolid, Spain) hit for 11 (5-8 FG, 1-1 3's) in the loss for WSC. 

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers were efficient from the field shooting 47% for the game. They were 23-49 overall and 8-15 from the 3-point line. They also hit a stellar 17-20 from the free throw line. 
  • The Tetons were a solid 25-55 (46%) from the field and 5-15 on 3's. WSC hit 10-15 from the foul stripe. 
  • MCC ruled the boards with a 32-17 advantage. The Pioneers had 7 offensive boards and the Tetons 3. 
  • MCC had 18 turnovers compared to 16 for the Tetons. 
  • The teams combined for 52 points in the 4th quarter (WSC 27 - MCC 25).

The loss knocked the Tetons out of sole possession of 2nd place in to a 3-way tie for 2nd. They are 11-6 in MonDak Conference play and 15-9 overall. The Pioneers, who avenged two earlier losses to the Tetons, moved to 7-11 in conference play and 10-17 overall. MCC will host Lake Region State College on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 19) at 1:00 PM MST.
