Pioneer Women Knock Off Lake Region for 4th Consecutive Victory

Jessica Tomkins (Melbourne, Australia) continued her stellar play piling up 26 points (9-12 FG, 8-10 FT) and grabbing 20 rebounds (10 offensive) as the Pioneers built an 18-point 3rd quarter lead before holding off a late Lake Region rally winning 72-63 Sunday afternoon in Miles City, MT. Freshman Becky Melcher (Forsyth, MT) banged in four 3-point field goals in the first half as the Pioneers built a 42-27 halftime bulge. Melcher finished the game with 19 points (6-12 FG, 5-10 3's, 2-4 FT). India Blyth (Melbourne, Australia) found a way to hit double figures despite a rough shooting afternoon scoring 10 points (2-15 FG, 1-6 3's, 5-6 FT).

Lake Region got 20 points from Tiziana Huici (5'7 Sophomore) and 18 more from Kyla Fitzgerald (5'10 Freshman) as the Royals climbed to within 2 points late in the 4th quarter before timely free throws by the Pioneers put the game out of reach. Ray'ven Robinson (5'7 Freshman) added 13 points and was the other double figure scorer for Lake Region. The Royals fell to 11-8 in MonDak Conference play and 19-9 overall.

  • Both teams shot 38% from the field and hit 24 field goals. 
  • The Pioneers hit 17-22 at the free throw line compared to oly 6-8 for the Royals. 
  • MCC hit 8-24 from the 3-point line and LRSC was 9-23. 
  • The Pioneers outrebounded the Royals 46-37. MCC had 12 offensive boards and LRSC had 6. 
  • MCC committed 19 turnovers and the Royals had 15. 

The Pioneers upped their record to 8-11 in MonDak Conference play and 11-17 overall. MCC will play its final home game on Monday night (Feb. 20) against Bismarck State at 5:30 PM. The Pioneers will honor sophomores Angelina Dimasi, Julia Paoletta, Inida Blyth, and Catalina de Giorgi. The regular season finale is next Sunday at Dawson.
