Cold Shooting Spells Doom as Pioneer Women's Season Comes to Close

The MCC Pioneer women's basketball team could never find the range on Saturday afternoon in Wahpeton, ND as Williston State battled out a 57-46 win to end the Pioneer season in the Region XIII semifinal. Williston State took advantage of 18 more trips to the free throw line than the Pioneers outscoring MCC 19-7 at the charity stripe to advance to the Region XIII championship. 

Canzas Hisbadhorse came off the bench to lead the Williston State charge by scoring 14 points (6-8 FG, 0-1 3's, 2-3 FT) and grabbing 6 rebounds. Kylee Old Elk made only one field goal but scored 11 points (1-6 FG, 1-3 3's, 8-8 FT) and Elizabeth Field contributed 11 points (3-6 FG, 0-1 3's, 5-8 FT)  and were the only Tetons in double figures in a defensive game. 

India Blyth (Melbourne, Australia) struggled from the field but led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points (4-17 FG, 3-12 3's, 3-4 FT) and Jessica Tomkins ended her spectacular freshman season with 12 points (5-14 FG, 2-2 FT) and10 rebounds.

  • The Pioneers shot only 9 free throws and connected on 7. Williston State was 19-27 at the free throw line. 
  • Williston State outscored the Pioneers 25-15 in the 4th quarter after leading 32-31 after 3 quarters.
  • WSC outrebounded MCC 50-43. Williston had 12 offensive rebounds and the Pioneers 10.
  • The Pioneers had 14 turnovers and Williston had 12. 
  • MCC was 17-65 (27%) from the field and 5-22 from the 3-point line. WSC was 18-58 (31%) and only 2-11 from 3-point line. 

The Tetons will play for the Region XIII championship on Sunday against NDSCS. First year coach Jenna Bolstad and her Pioneers season comes to a close at 13-19.
