3rd Quarter Struggles Stifle Pioneers in Loss to Dawson

The Dawson Community College Women's basketball team outscored the Miles CC Pioneers 22-10 in the 3rd quarter to what once was a 9-point Pioneer lead and turned it in to a 54-49 MonDak Conference victory on Sunday afternoon in Glendive. 

The Pioneers built a 9-point 2nd quarter lead with 4:40 to go with solid defense and the scoring of Becky Melcher (Forsyth, MT) and Brae Eneboe (Conrad, MT) as the pair combined for 19 of the Pioneers 26 points at the break. The Pioneers held a 26-22 halftime bulge. The 2 teams combined to shoot 1-15 from the 3-point line in the first half and the Pioneer defense held Dawson to 29% field goal shooting. 

Kylee Old Elk then led a 2nd half comeback as she scored 16 points in the half enroute to a 29-point effort (13-27 FG, 0-6 3's, 3-3 FT).

Melcher led the Pioneers in scoring with 17 points (6-10 FG, 1-4 3's, 4-4 FT) and also had 4 steals. Eneboe was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 12 points (5-11 FG, 2-2 FT) and 5 rebounds. The Pioneers leading scorer Lainey Smith (Miles City, MT) was held scoreless in the game but had a team high 7 rebounds.

  • The two teams combined for 51 turnovers (MCC 27, DCC 24).
  • The teams also combined to hit only 4-33 from the 3-point line. MCC was 2-14 (14%) and DCC was 2-19 (11 %).
  • MCC shot 18-47 (38%) from the field and 11-14 (79%) from the free throw line. 
  • DCC shot 23-64 (36%) from the field and 6-7 from the free throw line. 
  • Dawson outrebounded Miles 39-33 and had 16 offensive boards. The Pioneers corraled 8 offensive rebounds. 

The Pioneers are now 0-4 in MonDak Conference play and 3-6 overall. Dawson is 3-1 in conference play and 3-4 overall. 

The Pioneers travel to Williston State for another conference game Monday night at 4:30 PM MST.
