Pioneer Women Pick Up First MonDak Conference Win of Season

Pioneers 55... Bismarck State 51

The MCC Pioneers used a strong defensive effort and then held on down the stretch to pick up their first MonDak Conference win of the season with a 55-51 win over Bismarck State on Wednesday night in Miles City, MT. 

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball on an evening that both squads shot 30%. MCC made the most of twice as many attempts at the free throw line to pull out the win. 

Sophmore guard Becky Melcher (Forsyth, MT) had one of the only hot hands of the night with a 17 point (5-9 FG, 5-6 3's, 2-4 FT), 6 rebound performance lifting the Pioneers to victory. Fellow sophomores Reagan LaPlante (Miles City, MT) and Tyann Graham (Glasgow, MT) each scored 10 points for the Pioneers. LaPlante (5-7 FG) and Graham (3-14 FG, 2-9 3's, 2-2 FT) each had good nights on the boards with 8 and 5 rebounds respectively. Brae Eneboe (Conrad, MT) picked up 9 points (4-13 FG, 1-2 FT) and a team high 12 rebounds. Jessica Makayabo (Northlake, TX) scored 8 points (2-5 FG, 4-6 FT) and dished out a team high 4 assists off the bench for the Pioneers. 

Bismarck State was led by Carlie Lawrence with 17 points (7-20 FG, 2-12 3's, 1-2 FT) and Piper Harris with 13 points (5-10 FG, 2-5 3's, 1-2 FT).

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers shot 19-64 (30%) from the field and 7-25 (28%) from the 3-point line. MCC was also 10-16 (63%) from the free throw line. 
  • The Mystics shot 20-63 (32%) from the field and 7-32 (22%) from the 3-point line. BSC was only 4-8 (50%) from the free throw line. 
  • The Pioneers outrebounded the Mystics 46-36. MCC had 13 offensive rebounds and the Mystics only had 4. 
  • Both teams committed 14 turnovers. 
  • The Pioneers never trailed in the contest after falling behind 2-0 in the first 15 seconds of the game. 

Bismarck State fell to 1-4 in MonDak Conference play and are 1-8 overall. The Pioneers moved to 1-5 in MonDak Conference play and are now 4-7 overall. The Pioneers host Lake Region State College on Sunday at 1:00 PM. The game is the final conference game of the 2023 part of the Pioneers schedule.
