Pioneer Women Hang With Casper But 2nd Half Struggles Continue

The MCC Pioneer women's basketball team played one good half against perennial power Casper College but another slow 2nd half for MCC saw the Thunderbirds pull out an 80-50 victory on Thursday afternoon in Gillette, WY.

The game pitted former Pioneer coach Dwight Gunnare against current coach and former player for Gunnare at MCC Jenna Bolstad. 

Casper had a balanced scoring attack that saw 13 players hit the scoring column and only Logan Alvar hit double figures with 16 points (8-16 FG, 0-1 FT).

The Pioneers, whose only lead of the contest was 2-0, were led in scoring by Lainey Smith (Miles City, MT) with 16 points (6-11 FG, 3-7 3's, 1-1 FT) and Brae Eneboe (Conrad, MT) followed up with 10 points (4-6 FG, 2-4 FT). Miles City native Reagan LaPlante had a team high 11 rebounds and 4 assists.

  • Casper shot 30-77 (39%) for the game and 7-24 (29%) from 3-point range. They were also 13-17 at the free throw line. 
  • Miles shot 19-48 (40%) from the field and 5-19 (26%) from 3-point range. The Pioneers hit 7-11 at the free throw line. 
  • Casper outrebounded the Pioneers 42-38 with 20 of those being offensive rebounds. Miles had 8 offensive boards. 
  • The Casper defense forced 31 Pioneer turnovers while the T-Birds only had 8 miscues. 

The Pioneers are now 4-9 overall and 1-6 in MonDak Conference play. They are back in action this morning at 11:00 AM MST against the host of the Border Wars Gillette College.
