Turnovers Plague Pioneers in Loss to Dakota College

The MCC Pioneer women's basketball team scored 34 points in the 4th quarter but it was too little, too late as the Dakota College at Bottineau Lumberjacks walked out of the MCC Centra with a 87-80 MonDak Conference win on Wednesday night in Miles City. 

The Pioneers were plagued by a staggering 34 turnovers for the game in which Bottineau also turned the ball over 29 times. 

The Lumberjacks trailed the Pioneers two minutes in to the contest by 6 points but quickly turned things around to build a 22-15 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The lead grew to 9 points at halftime and then the Lumberjacks had an 18 point lead very early in the 4th quarter. The Pioneers all of the sudden got got in the 4th quarter and cut that lead to 5 points but could not get any closer. 

Hannah Plumbtree (6'3 Freshman) came off the bench to lead the Lumberjacks with 25 points (12-14 FG, 1-2 FT) and 5 blocked shots. Amari Butler (5'9 Freshman) added 20 points (7-15 FG, 0-1 3's, 6-6 FT), 11 steals, and 4 assists. Rozalind Strong (5'8 Sophomore) tallied 19 points (6-20 FG, 1-8 3's, 6-6 FT) and BrandeeRhae Mays (6'0 Freshman) had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. 

Lainey Smith (Miles City, MT) led the Pioneers with 20 points (7-18 FG, 6-11 3's) and also had 5 assists. Brae Eneboe (Conrad, MT) added 18 points (8-15 FG, 2-2 FT). Skyler Neumann (Spokane, WA) added 8 points and a team high 8 rebounds off the bench for the Pioneers. 

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers shot 29-76 (38%) from the field and 10-27 (37%) from the 3-point line. MCC was 12-17 from the free throw line. 
  • The Lumberjacks shot 34-68 (50%) from the field and just 1-10 from the 3-point line. DCB was a solid 18-20 from the free throw line. 
  • DCB had 21 steals in the game and MCC had 18.
  • Both teams had 37 rebounds. DCB had 7 offensive boards and MCC had 14. 
  • There was only one lead change in the game. 

The Pioneers fell to 3-8 in MonDak Conference play and 6-14 overall. DCB is now 4-7 in MonDak play and 10-10 overall. The Pioneers hit the court again tonight (Thursday, Jan. 25) against league leading Williston State at 5:30 PM MST.
