Lake Region Defense Shuts Down Pioneer Women

On an afternoon in which the MCC Pioneer defense was having success holding down the Lake Region State offense, the Pioneer offense couldn't get anything going for the first 3 quarters as the Royals pulled away for a 50-40 win on Sunday in Devils Lake, ND. 

The Pioneers took an 11-8 lead after the 1st quarter of play but only scored 14 points over the 2nd and 3rd quarters and trailed 42-25 heading the final quarter. In that final quarter, MCC scored the first 11 points and cut the lead to 42-36 but the Royals had the answer and expanded that lead again until the final horn sounded. 

Brae Eneboe (Conrad, MT) was the only Pioneer in double digits scoring 12 points (4-8 FG, 4-4 FT) while adding 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Lainey Smith (Miles City, MT) had a team high 8 rebounds while Jessica Makayabo (North Lake, TX), Kora LaBrie (Whitewater, MT), and Becky Melcher (Forsyth, MT) all had 6 rebounds in a game where 92 total rebounds were collected by the two teams. 

The Royals were led by Brooke Klenig with 12 points (6-10 FG, 0-1 3's) and Tiyahna Trottier added 10 points (3-11 FG, 1-6 3's, 3-4 FT). Kyla Fitzgerald had 9 rebounds and 6 assists while Kelsey Crossan added 8.

Lake Region improved to 11-8 in MonDak Conference play and are 18-10 overall. They sit in 3rd place in conference with 2 games remaining in the regular season. The Pioneers slipped to 3-16 in MonDak play and are 6-22 overall. They will play at Bismarck State on Monday night at 6:30 PM MST. The winner of that game will move up to 5th place in the Region XIII Division I standings.
