Fresh Faces Are the Theme as Pioneer Volleyball Begins Season Thursday

There is a brand new look on the volleyball court at Miles Community College. The 2023 version of Pioneer volleyball has all new faces on the court and on the sidelines.

After struggling through a 3-23 season in 2022, former Pioneer assistant and then interim head coach Robin Cusimano takes over the helm of the program on a permanant basis. To go along with Cusimano there are 11 Montana bred players that includes 10 freshman and one transfer sophomore. Cusimano will be assisted by former Pioneer Abby Gliko.

The lone sophomore is setter Maria Stewart from Billings, MT. Stewart spent her freshman season at Haskell University in Kansas and transferred to MCC after a successful campaign there.

This list of freshman includes Harli Graves (Defensive Specialist - Great Falls), Leah Champlin (Middle Hitter/RS - Billings), Ashtynn Egan (Outside Hitter - Colstrip), Jayda Southworth (Outside/Middle Hitter - Winifred), Bailey Nowicki (Setter/Defensive Specialist - Miles City), Ruby Gray (Middle Hitter - Billings), Kodiann Lynn (Outside Right Hitter - Simms), Bree Swanson (Libero - Chinook), Hattie Bumgarner (Middle Hitter - Belt), and Skyla Pierson (Outside Hitter - Deer Lodge).

The season starts Thursday with the Mystic Invitational in Bismarck with matches against Jamestown University JV (12:00 PM MST) and Dawson CC (4:00 PM MST). Friday the Pioneers will face Northwest College (8:00 AM MST) and Minnesota State Community and Technical College (2:00 PM).

The first home match of the season is Tuesday, August 22 as the Pioneers host the Rocky Mountain College JV at 7:00 PM. MonDak Conference play begins at North Dakota State College of Science on August 29.

Coach Cusimano said of the 2023 Pioneers: "We are very young and there will be some growing pains but I think we are going to surprise alot of teams. We have solid athletes that are going to rise to the occasion. I have high expections and lofty goals that are attainable and reset the culture of the Pioneer Volleyball program."
